An illustrated children's book about ghost pirate dogs on the Goodwin sands.

During university, we had a project brief titled 'Authorial Narrative'. We were prompted to research local folklore and make or make work of a story from Kent or the southeast of England.

I had already been drawing a few pirate dog characters in my spare time so decided to look into ghost ships for this project. That's when I found out about the Lady Lovibond which allegedly crashed into the Goodwin sands and continues to haunt it every 50 years. Reading about this inspired me to make my project about a ghost pirate dog crew who also happened to crash at the Goodwin Sands.

I hand-illustrated each page using Procreate on my iPad. I've always been fascinated with interactive pop-out books so I included different notes and photos that were drawn separately and then added during binding. The photos were on silky paper and could be removed whereas the paper notes and clippings were on a high GSM card and stuck in.

I'm not a strong story writer and spent most of my time on art but I believe my final piece turned out pretty good. I got quite attached to my pirate dog characters while I was working on this project and fully intend to use them again. Perhaps I could add a few more characters and improve the story if given more time.
